Why no load you might ask. Many mutual funds require a 5% upfront fee (frequently referred to as the front end load. This might not sound like much. But remember the power of compound interest. As Warren Buffet's bio says, think of investing as growing a snowball. If you take a huge chunk of snow out of your initial clump, you're going to end up with a whole lot less at the end. Many times 5% is used to compensate the broker. So it's quite a incestuous industry.
Why go with mutual funds? Don't speculate on stocks. It's usually a waste of time and you'll end up losing your shirt if you're not careful. You should leave your investing to a professional. Unless you're a genius, there's no way you can compete with the hot shots on Wall Street.
